Happy Ever After by Nora Roberts

Happy Ever After by Nora Roberts
Published by Berkley Books in November 2010
Bride Quartet #4
All Time Favorite

"As the public face of Vows wedding planning company, Parker Brown has an uncanny knack for fulfilling every bride's vision. She just can't see where her own life is headed. Mechanic Malcomb Kavanaugh loves figuring out how things work, and Parker is no exception. Both know that moving from minor flirtation to major hook-up is a serious step. Parker's business risks have always paid off, but now she'll have to take the chance of a lifetime with her heart..." - From Goodreads

Will you like it?
I really think Parker's story is my favorite.  Anyone who knows me in real life knows that I love my planner and carry it around with me everywhere I go.  She seems the most unwilling to open herself to love, and when she finally does it's a beautiful thing.

Savor the Moment by Nora Roberts

Savor the Moment by Nora Roberts
Published by Berkley Books in April 2010
Bride Quartet #3
All Time Favorite

"With the support of her friends, Laurel McBane’s dream of attending culinary school came true. Now, she’s repaying their kindness by creating extravagantly luscious tiers of cakes and other confectionary delights that add the perfect touch to their clients’ weddings.

As for romance, the low-key Laurel has had a mega crush on Parker’s older brother, Delaney Brown, since childhood. But she’s convinced that the Ivy League lawyer is still out of her reach. When Laurel’s quicksilver moods get the better of her—leading to an angry, hot, altogether mind-blowing kiss with Del—she’ll have to quiet the doubts in her mind to turn a moment of passion into forever…"- From Goodreads

I love how feisty Laurel is in her own book.  She knows what she wants and doesn't take any crap doing it.  If you love weddings or romance, then this series is definitely for you.

Another review from the Cassie's Babblings archives!  Planning my own wedding made me really want to read this series again, and I'm glad I did!

"In Bed of Roses, florist Emma Grant is finding career success with her friends at Vows wedding planning company, and her love life appears to be thriving. Though men swarm around her, she still hasn’t found Mr. Right. And the last place she’s looking is right under her nose.

But that’s just where Jack Cooke is. He’s so close to the women of Vows that he’s practically family, but the architect has begun to admit to himself that his feelings for Emma have developed into much more than friendship. When Emma returns his passion—kiss for blistering kiss—they must trust in their history…and in their hearts." -- From Goodreads

Vision in White by Nora Roberts

Vision in White by Nora Roberts
Published by Berkley Books in April 2009.
Bride Quartet #1
All Time Favorite

I'm reposting this review from the Cassie Babblings archives.  I've started to relisten to these audiobooks at work, just for something to listen to.  I also want to be real about what I'm reading.  I don't want to only post about the hottest new releases.
Enjoy!

"Wedding photographer Mackensie "Mac" Elliot is most at home behind the camera, but her focus is shattered moments before an important wedding rehearsal when she bumps into the bride-to-be's brother...an encounter that has them both seeing stars.

A stable, safe English teacher, Carter Maguire is definitely not Mac's type. But a casual fling might be just what she needs to take her mind off bridezillas. Of course, casual flings can turn into something more when you least expect it. And Mac will have to turn to her three best friends-and business partners-to see her way to her own happy ending." -- From Goodreads

Honestly, if you like weddings, friendships, and romance this series is for you.  I read this series every year (the audiobooks are great!).  It's like revisiting old friends.  I would recommend x10 this series.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Published by Doubleday in September 2011

"Welcome to Le Cirque des RĂªves.

Beyond the smoke and mirrors, however, a fierce competition is under way--a contest between two young illusionists, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood to compete in a "game" to which they have been irrevocably bound by their mercurial masters. Unbeknownst to the players, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will.

As the circus travels around the world, the feats of magic gain fantastical new heights with every stop. The game is well under way and the lives of all those involved--the eccentric circus owner, the elusive contortionist, the mystical fortune-teller, and a pair of red-headed twins born backstage among them--are swept up in a wake of spells and charms.

But when Celia discovers that Marco is her adversary, they begin to think of the game not as a competition but as a wonderful collaboration. With no knowledge of how the game must end, they innocently tumble headfirst into love. A deep, passionate, and magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

Their masters still pull the strings, however, and this unforeseen occurrence forces them to intervene with dangerous consequences, leaving the lives of everyone from the performers to the patrons hanging in the balance. "

Will you like it?
I picked this book up because I had to read it for book club.  I listened to it in audio, and I'm really glad that I did.  Jim Dale (the Harry Potter narrator) read it, and made the characters come to life.  I don't think I would have picked this book up on my own, without the pressure of book club.

The story is very twisty, and hard to follow.  We jump back and forth in time and place, with many of the same characters appearing in both places.  The ending though to me was the most confusing part. I'm still not entirely sure what happened.

However, the writing is beautiful, and I do love how the stories finally interweave in the last 1/4 of the book.  Even though Jim Dale is amazing, this would be one of those books to read in print so that you can flip back and forth when the stories get too confusing.

Magnus Chase & the Gods of Asgard #2

"Thor's hammer is missing again. The thunder god has a disturbing habit of misplacing his weapon--the mightiest force in the Nine Worlds. But this time the hammer isn't just lost, it has fallen into enemy hands. If Magnus Chase and his friends can't retrieve the hammer quickly, the mortal worlds will be defenseless against an onslaught of giants. Ragnarok will begin. The Nine Worlds will burn. Unfortunately, the only person who can broker a deal for the hammer's return is the gods' worst enemy, Loki--and the price he wants is very high."

Will you like it?
Any book written by Rick Riordan is an automatic must-read for me.  I love listening to them because the narrators are always fantastic and Riordan's words are so funny!

As much as I love Riordan's books, they have become a little formulaic.  Hero goes on quest.  Hero gets into a few scrapes.  Hero goes into last battle and against all odds, wins.  BUT.  I always learn about the Gods that Riordan features.  I am always learning and laughing, and that is what makes me come back to his books time after time.

I will be sorry to see Magnus Chase go after the next book, but I can't wait to find out what else Riordan has up his sleeve.

Turbo Twenty-Three by Janet Evanovich

Turbo Twenty-Three by Janet Evanovich
Published by Bantam in November 2016
Stephanie Plum #23

"Larry Virgil skipped out on his latest court date after he was arrested for hijacking an eighteen-wheeler full of premium bourbon. Fortunately for bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, Larry is just stupid enough to attempt almost the exact same crime again. Only this time he flees the scene, leaving behind a freezer truck loaded with Bogart ice cream and a dead body—frozen solid and covered in chocolate and chopped pecans.

As fate would have it, Stephanie’s mentor and occasional employer, Ranger, needs her to go undercover at the Bogart factory to find out who’s putting their employees on ice and sabotaging the business. It’s going to be hard for Stephanie to keep her hands off all that ice cream, and even harder for her to keep her hands off Ranger. It’s also going to be hard to explain to Trenton’s hottest cop, Joe Morelli, why she is spending late nights with Ranger, late nights with Lula and Randy Briggs—who are naked and afraid—and late nights keeping tabs on Grandma Mazur and her new fella. Stephanie Plum has a lot on her plate, but for a girl who claims to have “virtually no marketable skills,” these are the kinds of sweet assignments she does best." - From Amazon

Will you like it?
This is a classic Stephanie Plum novel.  Someone needs to get caught by Stephanie, she stumbles into a case much bigger than she thinks, funny stuff happens with Lula, Stephanie tells herself she should only see Morelli, then Stephanie kisses Ranger, then Stephanie ends up almost killed.  However, they are entertaining reads, and I definitely laugh out loud when I listen to them.

Keep writing, Janet Evanovich!

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalo

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
Published by Jimmy Patterson in September 2016
Stalking Jack the Ripper #1

"Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world." - From Goodreads

Will you like it?
If you like murder, Victorian London, mysteries, mayhem, or horror, you will love this book.  I listened to the audiobook version, and I loved the narrator's accent.  She made the whole book come alive for me.

There was one part that mostly gave away who Jack was, so that wasn't as entertaining as I thought it was going to be.  Also, the ending was not entirely realistic.  I think Audrey would have been bound by society's rules for learning about the forensic sciences.   I still really enjoyed this book, and I will add the rest of the series to my to-read shelf on Goodreads.

Will you like it?
I loved hearing the stories of Chip and Joanna Gaines.  I am completely obsessed with their show, Fixer Upper!  It was wonderful to finally get a glimpse of the people behind all of the funny bits you see on television.  The love that they share for each other, their family, and their community shines through.  They have had a lot of lucky breaks in their lives, and they credit it all to their faith.  I found it refreshing that they talk about their faith but are not overly preachy.

Overall, if you love their show, you must read their book!  I would recommend the audiobook, because it is narrated by both Chip and Joanna.  Such a wonderful read!

The Copper Gauntlet by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare

The Copper Gauntlet by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare
Published by Scholastic Press in September 2015
Magisterium #2

"Callum Hunt’s summer break isn’t like other kids’. His closest companion is a Chaos-ridden wolf, Havoc. His father suspects him of being secretly evil. And, of course, most kids aren’t heading back to the magical world of the Magisterium in the fall.

It’s not easy for Call . . . and it gets even harder after he checks out his basement and discovers that his dad might be trying to destroy both him and Havoc.

Call escapes to the Magisterium -- but things only intensify there. The Alkahest -- a copper gauntlet capable of separating certain magicians from their magic -- has been stolen. And in their search to discover the culprit, Call and his friends Aaron and Tamara awaken the attention of some very dangerous foes -- and get closer to an even more dangerous truth." - From Goodreads

Will you like it?
I liked this novel better than the first one.  The first bit was slow, but the ending more than made up for the slow start.  The world building and character development continued with this book, and I loved that now we got to see more of the history between Constantine and Call's dad.  I'm excited to continue with this series and see where it ends up.

The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare

The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare
Published by Scholastic Press in September 2014
Magisterium #1

"Most kids would do anything to pass the Iron Trial.

Not Callum Hunt. He wants to fail.

All his life, Call has been warned by his father to stay away from magic. If he succeeds at the Iron Trial and is admitted into the Magisterium, he is sure it can only mean bad things for him.

So he tries his best to do his worst - and fails at failing.

Now the Magisterium awaits him. It's a place that's both sensational and sinister, with dark ties to his past and a twisty path to his future.

The Iron Trial is just the beginning, for the biggest test is still to come . . . " - From Goodreads

Will you like it?
Kids who like Harry Potter or Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson will love this series.  The sense of adventure is the same.  Even some plot details are eerily similar to those found in Harry Potter and Percy Jackson novels.  Honestly, this series is a great readalike for those kids who love series and love adventure novels.  It won't win any major literary awards, but it's just the thing to recommend.

This first novel had pretty good world building.  For some reason when I first started this book I really thought Clare's Shadowhunters were supposed to be in it as well.  The plot was fairly straightforward, but I liked the "twist" at the end.

Will you like it?
Honestly, if you like the Lunar Chronicles, you're going to love this collection of short stories.  The stories give background on all of the characters, plus some additional content!  Not going to lie, but the last story totally made me sniffle.  I love these characters so much, and it's really hard to say goodbye.

Curious Minds by Janet Evanovich and Phoef Sutton

Curious Minds by Janet Evanovich and Phoef Sutton
Published by Bantam Dell in August 2016
Knight and Moon #1

"Emerson Knight is introverted, eccentric, and has little to no sense of social etiquette. Good thing he’s also brilliant, rich, and (some people might say) handsome, or he’d probably be homeless. Riley Moon has just graduated from Harvard Business and Harvard Law. Her aggressive Texas spitfire attitude has helped her land her dream job as a junior analyst with mega-bank Blane-Grunwald. At least Riley Moon thought it was her dream job, until she is given her first assignment: babysitting Emerson Knight.

What starts off as an inquiry about missing bank funds in the Knight account leads to inquiries about a missing man, missing gold, and a life-and-death race across the country. Through the streets of Washington, D.C., and down into the underground vault of the Federal Reserve in New York City, an evil plan is exposed. A plan so sinister that only a megalomaniac could think it up, and only the unlikely duo of the irrepressibly charming Emerson Knight and the tenacious Riley Moon can stop it." -- From Goodreads

Will you like it?
I love this new series by Janet Evanovich and Phoef Sutton.  As I was listening to the audiobook at work, I couldn't help but giggle.  A LOT.  I don't want to give away a lot of the plot, but I liked how Riley and Emerson had chemistry, but their characters were getting to know each other.  The flirtatious banter was exactly that, and we didn't have to worry that they were going to end up in bed together.  Will they eventually?  Probably.  But I love seeing the slow burn happen.

Will you like it?
This entire book was dedicated to massing an army.  It was entertaining to go into all of Conner's stories.  However, it really didn't advance the plot.  Either way, I love the setting and the characters of this series.  I can't wait to read the next one!

It takes a demigod to know, and Percy Jackson can fill you in on the all the daring deeds of Perseus, Atalanta, Bellerophon, and the rest of the major Greek heroes. Told in the funny, irreverent style readers have come to expect from Percy, ( I've had some bad experiences in my time, but the heroes I'm going to tell you about were the original old school hard luck cases. They boldly screwed up where no one had screwed up before. . .) and enhanced with vibrant artwork by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco, this story collection will become the new must-have classic for Rick Riordan's legions of devoted fans--and for anyone who needs a hero. Now a successful photographer living under the name Naomi Carson, she has found a place that calls to her, thousands of miles away from everything she’s ever known. Naomi wants to embrace the solitude, but the residents of Sunrise Cove keep forcing her to open up—especially the determined Xander Keaton.

Naomi can feel her defenses failing, and knows that the connection her new life offers is something she’s always secretly craved. But as she’s learned time and again, her past is never more than a nightmare away." -- From Goodreads

Will you like it?
This was a classic Nora Roberts book for me.  The first half was a bit slow for me, and Naomi spent the majority of her time furnishing her house.  After the new round of abductions happen, that's when the story picked up the pace.  I also guessed the killer way before the end.  Overall a pretty good suspense novel.

Tricky Twenty-Two by Janet Evanovich

Tricky Twenty-Two by Janet Evanovich
Published by Bantam in November 2015
Stephanie Plum #22

"Stephanie Plum might not be the world's greatest bounty hunter, but she knows when she's being played. Ken Globovic (aka Gobbles), hailed as the Supreme Exalted Zookeeper of the animal house known as Zeta fraternity, has been arrested for beating up the dean of students at Kiltman College. Gobbles has missed his court date and gone into hiding. People have seen him on campus, but no one will talk. Things just aren't adding up, and Stephanie can't shake the feeling that something funny is going on at the college - and it's not just Zeta fraternity pranks.

As much as people love Gobbles, they hate Doug Linken. When Linken is gunned down in his backyard it's good riddance, and the list of possible murder suspects is long. The only people who care about finding Linken's killer are Trenton cop Joe Morelli, who has been assigned the case, security expert Ranger, who was hired to protect Linken, and Stephanie, who has her eye on a cash prize and hopefully has some tricks up her sleeve." -- From Goodreads

Will you like it?
The Stephanie Plum novels have felt repetitious for the last couple.  I don't know if it was listening to this one on audiobook, but it made me giggle almost the entire time.  Morelli and Ranger still are the love interests, but we had a snag with Morelli.  It sounds like Stephanie is another step closer in choosing a partner (hopefully).  The audiobook has renewed my interest in this series, and I can't wait to listen to Turbo Twenty-Three.

Will you like it?
I truly enjoyed this book.  It centered around teams coming to Mr. Lemoncello's library to compete in the library olympics.  I loved how this book combined the Olympics, intellectual freedom, and banned books.  The ending was pretty good, but definitely written for younger kids.

I loved the narrator.  This narrator also read the Percy Jackson novels, so it also felt like Percy was telling this story as well.

It isn’t long before Nick’s covert partner, Special Agent Kate O’Hare, is in hot pursuit of the crook who stole her con man.

Luckily they have the help of an eccentric out-of-work actor, a bandit who does his best work in the sewers, and Kate’s dad, Jake. The pressure’s on for Nick and Kate to make this work—even if they have to lay their lives on the line." -- From Goodreads

Will you like it?
This series is pure comedic gold.  I love the cast of characters that appear in every book.  This one did have a little more of an edge to it though.  Nick and Kate were really worried about dying in this book.  It is surprising to me that no one has died yet.

I prefer the audiobooks for this series.  The narrator is perfect, and manages to sound different for each person.  I have a weird feeling that this series is about ready to be done.  And I'll be really sad when it is.

If you like fantasy, yes.  If you like strong female characters, yes.  If you like unique world building, yes.  I truly was fascinated with this book.  Safi and Iseult are completely badass, and don't take shit from anyone.  I can't wait to read the next book.  With the ending that we had, I think some major things are going to be happening right away.  Also, I listened to the audiobook and I LOVED the accents that the narrator gave all of the characters.
